HEALTH: Fasting BS

-If the requested examination (like FBS) requires NPO (non per orem or nothing by mouth)-

Before collection (extraction)...
The commonly-asked question: "Did you 'fast'?"... (huh?)

FBS (Fasting Blood Sugar) is a SCREENING test for diabetes. In other words, it only suggests that other testing needs to be done.

In healthy individuals, the blood sugar level will take 2 to 5 hours to return to normal after a meal.

But why is it recommended to undergo overnight fasting for at least 8 hours?
> When having a Fasting Blood Sugar, it is important that everything is cleared from the system.
Therefore, the result of the fasting blood sugar is MOSTLY accurate, if the patient fasted for at least 8 hours before collection/extraction.

The normal values for fasting blood sugar (American Diabetes Association):
>From 70 to 99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.4 mmol/L)

However, reference values (in most tests) vary from one laboratory to another because laboratories employ different methods for the analysis of the analyte.

In addition to FBS, RBS (Random Blood Sugar) is also a test for measuring blood sugar level, but it does not require fasting.

MEMENTO: I must say that it is important for the patient to discuss his questions or concerns regarding his laboratory test result/s with his doctor, who is familiar with the patient's medical history and current condition, and NOT with other people.

  1. I must say that i do agree with you on sharing information and that it should be kept within a close circle.
The trouble is here in the UK just about every council worker from housing to health can look up your details on this national database.
And of course you cant even send an email without being screened for inflammatory language.
