SPORTS: 2008 SUMMER OLYMPICS COUNTDOWN [4]

Citius, Altius, Fortius

The upcoming Beijing 2008 Olympics is the 29th Olympic Games. (Since the 1916, 1940 and 1944 Olympic Games were cancelled because of war, it is the 26th, right?) :-?

But the first recorded Olympic Games were set in 776 BCE. However, in 393 CE, the games were abolished by Roman emperor Theodosius I because of their pagan influences.

There were a lot of people who proposed to revive the Olympics, but it was Pierre de Coulbertin who was the most persistent that resulted to the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece, in 1896.

The players/participants in the first modern Olympic Games joined at their own expense.

And it's interesting to know that since it wasn't advertised internationally, there were only few contestants who attended and some of them were just tourists who happened to be in that area during the Games. (Sweet!)
