I like to cook but not the part when I need to slice or mince onions as they always make me cry for no reason at all... or perhaps, there is a reason the tears fall down every time.
When cutting, the gas in the union called propaniethiol S-oxide is activated. It then combines with the enzymes found in the onion resulting in a release of passive sulphur compound of the onion. As this sulphur moves upward and reaches the eye, it mingles with the water in the eyes creating sulphuric acid which will then cause tears to form and fall while cutting this bulbous plant.

Certainly, I am not crying for no reason at all.
